An Indyx alternative with free insights and an on-device closet.

Indyx is a thoughtful closet app with a free, unlimited closet. At the time of writing it offers an Insider plan, around $12.99 a month or $74.99 a year, for deeper insights. It also offers human-assisted closet digitizing and resale, and it runs on iPhone and Android.

Cotton overlaps with Indyx on the idea that a closet app should show you what you actually wear. It differs on where that happens and what it costs.

Insights

In Indyx, the deeper insights sit in the paid Insider plan. In Cotton, Insights are free for everyone: the share of your closet you wore this month, the pieces that have waited longest, your most-worn pieces, and cost per wear.

If wear data is the main reason you want a closet app, that difference adds up over a year.

Digitizing your closet

Indyx offers human-assisted digitizing, which is genuinely useful if you have a very large wardrobe and would rather someone else did the work.

Cotton takes the opposite approach: make doing it yourself fast. Pick up to 30 photos at once. Each piece is cut out on your phone with Apple Vision in about a second, and several pieces in one photo are separated. Colors are measured from the photo, not guessed.

Resale, outfits and privacy

Indyx includes resale, which helps if you want to sell what you don’t wear. Cotton has no shopping, resale or affiliate links.

Cotton’s Today screen builds one outfit a day from your closet and favors pieces you haven’t worn lately. There is no account, your closet stays on your phone and in its backup, and analytics are anonymous.

What Cotton doesn’t do

Cotton has no Android app, no web app, no social feed, and no shopping or affiliate links. If any of those matter to you, one of the other apps here will suit you better.

Questions

Are Cotton’s Insights really free?+

Yes. Insights are free for everyone, on any plan: share of your closet worn this month, longest-waiting pieces, most-worn pieces and cost per wear. Pro only removes the 40-piece limit and adds Studio polishes.

Does Cotton help me sell clothes?+

No. Cotton has no resale, shopping or affiliate links. Its Insights can show you what you haven’t worn, and what you do with that is up to you.

Does Cotton need an account?+

No. You open the app and start adding clothes. Your closet is stored on your phone and in its backup. The only time a photo leaves the phone is when you choose Studio polish for that one piece, and the server doesn’t keep it.

How much does Cotton cost?+

Cotton is free up to 40 pieces, with every feature included. Cotton Pro removes the limit and includes 20 Studio polishes a month. It costs $2.99 a month, $19.99 a year, or $39.99 once for lifetime access.
